A study published in Experimental Biology and Medicine found that breathing in the scent of grapefruit and lemon essential oils improved neurological activity that promoted the breakdown of body fat.
“Studies have shown that grapefruit, in particular, has potent effects on increasing satiety, but these findings are based on dietary intake,” said Atsushi Kato, M.D., Ph.D., RPh, DABFM (Atsushi Kato Clinic Co.) in Japan and lead author of this study. “We investigated whether olfactory stimulation with the odor of grapefruit or lemon essential oil can promote satiety through sympathetic nerve activity.”
The researchers of this study addressed the effect of olfactory stimulation with the scent of grapefruit essential oil and lemon essential oil on sympathetic nerve activity of the white adipose tissue (WAT). The results demonstrated that the fragrance of the citrus group increased sympathetic nerve activity destroying fat deposits which ultimately suppressed weight gain.
“This study found that increased nerve activation by aromas may suppress the development of obesity,” said Gerald Weissmann, M.D., Editor-in-Chief of Experimental Biology and Medicine. “This study found that increasing the nerve firing in fat tissue increases the production of enzymes that enable the breakdown and oxidation of body fat.”
Olfaction is one of our five senses and plays a significant role not only in our sense of taste and pleasure but also in our ability to detect hazards such as fire and spoiled food. In this study, the investigators demonstrated that olfactory stimulation with grapefruit or lemon essential oils increases sympathetic nerve activity leading to a suppression of weight gain from a high-fat diet.
