Buddha Hand, also known as the fingered citron, has an unusual shape with the fruit being segmented into finger-like sections, resembling a human hand. The fruit is thought to have originated in India or China, where most citrus fruits seem to have originated. It is closely related to the lemon.
The Buddha’s hand has been used for centuries as a perfume because it is very fragrant, also for religious purposes, as an ornamental tree in gardens, and medicinally as a tonic. In China, the Buddha’s hand fruit is a symbol of happiness, longevity and good fortune and is used as a traditional temple offering and a New Year’s gift. Traditionally, Buddha prefers the hand to be closed symbolizing the act of praying.
The essential oil from Buddha’s hand is extracted through cold pressing the peel and steam distillation has been used for extracting oil from the leaves of the fruit. The fruit is used for culinary purposes because of its aromatic flavor and medicinally because of its many healing properties. It is used for dietary purposes and for aromatherapy leaving you feeling refreshed, relaxed and invigorated. It is also used for household cleaning because it is a great disinfectant and smells so fresh and lemony.
