Weight Loss Using Coconut Oil

The new year is here and many people start it off by trying to lose weight. Shall we see what coconut oil has to offer?

What is Coconut Oil?

Coconut oil is an edible oil extracted from the kernel or meat of matured coconuts harvested from the coconut palm (Cocos nucifera). It has various applications in food, medicine, and industry.

Benefits of coconut oil would be:  hair care, skin care, stress relief, cholesterol level maintenance, weight loss, boosted immune system, proper digestion and regulated metabolism. It also provides relief from kidney problems, heart diseases, high blood pressure, diabetes, HIV, and cancer, while helping to improve dental quality, bone strength, and Alzheimer’s disease.

Abdominal obesity, also known as central obesity, is when excessive abdominal fat around the stomach and abdomen has built up to the extent that it is likely to have a negative impact on health such as cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease as well as other metabolic and vascular diseases.

Now, let’s review this study. Researchers investigated the effects of dietary supplementation with coconut oil on abdominal obesity and cholesterol levels on women between the ages of 20-40 years. The groups were either given dietary supplements of soy bean oil or coconut oil over a 12 week period. Results were reductions in body mass index (BMI) were observed in both groups but only the coconut group exhibited a reduction in waist circumference.

The authors concluded that “It appears that dietetic supplementation with coconut oil does not cause dyslipidemia and seems to promote a reduction in abdominal obesity.” Bravo coconut oil – once again proving its worthiness in weight reduction!
